چکیده

The head-related transfer function (HRTF) describes the individual perception of sound for different angles of incidence of a sound wave. The directional cues contained in the HRTF are introduced by reflection and diffraction of the sound wave at head and torso and are highly individual [1]. When hearing a binaural signal synthesized via a generic HRTF – deviating from the listener’s HRTF – localization is degraded, especially for the height impression as these deviations are is strongly related to the individual geometry of the pinna. As lateral impression relies on binaural cues, hearing with a generic HRTF will produce an overshooting or undershooting of the localization.

Auditory Presence, Individualized Head-Related Transfer Functions, and Illusory Ego-Motion in Virtual Environments

It is likely that experiences of presence and self-motion elicited by binaurally simulated and reproduced rotating sound fields can be degraded by the artifacts caused by the use of generic Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs). In this paper, an HRTF measurement system which allows for fast data collection is discussed. Furthermore, effects of generic vs. individualized HRTFs were investigat...

Smoothing individual head-related transfer functions in the frequency and spatial domains.

When re-synthesizing individual head related transfer functions (HRTFs) with a microphone array, smoothing HRTFs spectrally and/or spatially prior to the computation of appropriate microphone filters may improve the synthesis accuracy. In this study, the limits of the associated HRTF modifications, until which no perceptual degradations occur, are explored. First, complex spectral smoothing of ...

Subjective Selection of Non-individual Head-related Transfer Functions

The individualization of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) for virtual acoustics is a key technique for the optimization of the directional reproduction. This paper presents a subjective selection method for a fast, individual selection of one HRTF from a catalogue of non-individual ones. The selection method gives random access to sounds filtered with the HRTFs. In a first selection step...

Enabling Individualized Virtual Auditory Space using Morphological Measurments

Virtual auditory space (VAS) refers to the synthesis and simulation of spatial hearing using earphones or a speaker system. High-fidelity VAS requires the use of individualized head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) which describe the acoutic filtering properties of the listener’s external auditory periphery. Because HRTFs are unique for each individual (“the auditory thumbprint”), a primary h...

Personalization of head-related transfer functions in the median plane based on the anthropometry of the listener's pinnae.

A listener's own head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are required for accurate three-dimensional sound image control. The HRTFs of other listeners often cause front-back confusion and errors in the perception of vertical angles. However, measuring the HRTFs of all listeners for all directions of a sound source is impractical because the measurement requires a special apparatus and a lot of ...
